Let’s Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week give-away!

August 3, 2012

in Give-aways & Promotions

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August in more than 170 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration made by WHO and UNICEF policy-makers in August 1990 to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is the best way to provide newborns with the nutrients they need. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six months old, and continued breastfeeding with the addition of nutritious complementary foods for up to two years or beyond. {source: WHO}

Now I have non-baby kids, three of them being of the teenage variety – and them sending me batshitcrazy regularly to the point of sometimes wanting to give them away for free – you may not know that once upon a time I was a babywearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping , cloth nappying, cloth breast pads using “hippy”! – I even owned a store retailing all these types of products for a few years.  And to some, I am, and always will be a hippy… which I don’t mind, I’d rather be a hippy than a lot of things!

Even though my beautiful sweet adorable babies are growing up to be the reason I have grey hair and am near possibly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I still remember the days when we had the most amazing Mother Baby bond through them early years – before teenagerhood stepped in and made them into aliens.

The morning my first babe was born was one of the most amazing days of my life. He was handed to me, and I was told, “Here’s your baby boy”. If you’re a Mum, you know exactly the overwhelming feeling you have come over you when that first born is put into your arms for the very first time.

It’s the most emotional, powerful, trippy thing ever. It’s like the biggest rush you could ever have.

It’s completely awesome.

And if, like me, you decide to breastfeed your kids… every single time it comes to them feeding – even on the most fatigued, stressed out long nights of the first six months – that moment when they were first handed to you, replays in your mind when you look at them. And every emotion you had plays along with it.

So to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, hitting a following of 600 nearly 700! on Facebook, and just because I want to..

I’m having a “Let’s Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week” give-away!

Prize #1 – Books to share with your little one. Celebrating the journey and relationship of breastfeeding and the new babe – My Brother Jimi Jazz, and The Wonderful Place – Author, Chrissy Butler. Total prize pack value $40.

The best breastfeeding experience for me apart from actually breastfeeding my children came when I was pregnant with K, child number . My youngest Z at the time was 16, (yes 16 a long time between babes) and as I have always been very open with everything woith my kids we were discussing birth and breastfeeding, how I would do things ;) He asked a little appalled if I was going to breastfeed the baby when his mates were over? Well of course I replied ;) But mum, that um not appropriate, we’re 16 we dont want to see your boobs flashing around!! You wait and see I said and moved on the conversation. After bringing K home from hospital and feeding he saw how natural it was with no inappropraiate boob flashing, and when his mates would come ove he would wave his hand and say “oh mums just breastfeeding over there, dont worry about that” and carry on through! lol I am proud to say that now years later he shares all my breastfeeding news stories, pro breastfeeding articles and homebirthing articles, on his facebook page even, and is pround to say that his mum still breastfeeds another little babe, a sister E at just over 2 years of age. Thats my boy <3

My eldest was about 2 he used to have a fasination with the fact that everyone in the house besides me (mum) had a doodle. He was that concerned by it that everytime we were out without fail he would wait until we were at the checkout and say quite loudly to the lady or man serving us that my mummy doesn’t have a doodle anymore, It fell off!

Seriously, could I have been more embarrassed? It fell off! That would mean I had one to begin with. Hahahaha. In the mind of a 2 year old!!

Hope you got a belly full of laugh from my embarrassment, as everyone else in the shops within a 10 mile radius used to :)

I was going to say my mumma moment was when my little boy stopped nursing to look up at me and smile. As an exhausted first time mum, this was beautiful…

But, you said you love to laugh… SO… it was definitely ALSO the moment my beautiful little girl was a few weeks old and pooped so hard as I was changing her that it got all over my face.

It was awesome. awesome. awesome.

Outside, enjoying some sunshine with then miss eleven months, only to turn and catch her putting a snail in her mouth. Shocked, I couldn’t get it out of her mouth fast enough, as I was gagging, then vomiting with horror all in the same breath. Thank goodness I toughened up by the time the next two came along!

That necklace!! Is superb! Off to window shop there now…

God miss cinders you want me to regale ONE forever imprinted memory???

I think a slide show of memories just whizzed through my brain. Like the time Nathan decided to go looking at the long boards by himself when he as 18mths old…while we are at a beach.next to a main road. Surrounded by about 1000 nippers. Longest 20mins of my life! …then there was the time that aston decided to venture into the field. At two. By himself…well the dog was with him thank Fuck!! … Guess I am describing the feeling I felt of utter relief at seeing them. Ok. Alive. There. …. Love… Pure love…

After 2 baby girls I learnt the hard way never to lean over a baby boy with your mouth open when changing them-they regularly wee when a clean nappy is on the go

Oh the joys of breastfeeding! Such a gentle, intimate experience. Except when my son decided that it was both funny and fascinating to stick his finger up my nose while he was nursing. And despite my best efforts to distract him and remove the offending finger (which was the perfect size to fit into my nostril), he would not give up. This phase lasted a while.

Funny enough I read about this competition a few days ago and was pondering which ‘mummy moment’ stands out the most, when master 17 months rose to the challenge. He stood up while I was changing him and took a few steps- which is a big achievement- over to the coffee table. While I clapped and cheered he looked so proud of himself. Carried away in the moment I didn’t notice the present he had given me- a great big pile on the floor. Reflecting back it was even funnier when Charlie stood in it and landed bottom first on my lap! No need to say that we both needed a shower in the end- definitely a memorable Mummy moment!

I remember my baby son crying and not being able to sooth him..my mum gave me a break and she gently rocking him while patting him..he burped and settled! That memory is 30yrs old but it shaped the way i reacted with my children..carm wins !

A moment I will never forget, not long after we moved the boys went off to play. L eventually came back laughing hysterically, but as he opened the door I could hear N screaming uncontrollably. L tells me that he is next door with the dog, now they have 2 very big dogs. Hubby and I take off running, imagining him being ripped to shreds by the screaming. We get there and find their little jack russel pup bouncing around licking his ankles. L had put his 2 year old brother over the fence and left him there. To this day if you mention dogs N gets very serious and tells you about the naughty puppy eating him. It will probably be the scariest and funniest moment of my life.

Off to like the pages.
