I never owned a bike as a kid. I think I had one of them little trikes when I was a toddler, but that was it. So I’ve always made a point of my kids having bikes.
I think all up in the past seventeen years of being a parent, I’ve bought about thirteen bikes. A couple of skateboards, one scooter, and about seven of those little plastic toddler trikes. Untold amounts of stack hats. And quite a few boxes of band-aids.
I’m thinking about not buying bikes any more. Or skateboards. I may think about buying a scooter or two in the future… but we’ll see.
Christmas Day, about twenty minutes after getting his skateboard JW14 stacked it and came close to breaking his arm.
A couple of days later TJ16 was riding BL17′s bike and stacked it 3kms from home. The tough little cookie wrapped her mashed up knee in her shirt, smashed the bike seat and handlebars back to where they should have been with her gravel rashed hands – nearly where they should have been anyway – and rode back home.
TJ16 shall now forever be known as “Gravel”.
The events of Christmas week made me think about my words for 2013.
The kids always try new things, and they always make time to do things they enjoy doing. Stacking skateboards and bikes aren’t one of them. But jumping on a new skateboard only a couple of months after starting to learn to skate, and riding a bike for the first time in forever takes guts.
Which made me realise I already had my words, I just didn’t know it.

Time - Time is of the essence, one day it’ll run out. Make the most of it. Make the time to go where I need to go. Talk to who I need to talk to. Enjoy every moment there is to enjoy. And don’t forget to take time out for me too!
Try - Try new things and don’t worry about failing. Try to be the best I can for me. Try to forgive more. Try to stay in touch – which also translates to “try not to hate talking on the phone so much”. Just bloody try anyway!!!
Make the time, and try to be more.
HAPPY NEW YEAR BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! MWAH!

What fantastic words for this year !!!! Last year I didn’t have any words but I did push my comfort zones last year – running the GC 10km race, The Stampede, Warrior Dash – those were things which I never ever imagined I would accomplish but I did – I want more things to aim for this year !!
I so get you about talking on the phone – one of my pet hates !!!! I would rather run 5km than answer the phone !!!
Have the best year – love, hugs and positive energy !

I would rather clean the toilet than talk on the phone! Hahaha!
It floors me to think of running so far. You’re a trooper! Definitely keep on it this year! If you can do that last year, imagine what you can achieve this year!

Such excellent words for 2013, I like em. Time is definitely an important one, taking the time to just be and enjoy life, enjoy my daughter and not worry about crappy little things. Patience is my big word for the year, to find more and keep the little that I have!\
Happy New Year!

‘Patience’ ohhh that one is a never ending challenge for me!
I already started with the ‘time’ with the kids. Ice Age 4 for the 4365th time yesterday, and Harry Potter this morning for the uncountableth time! I’m thinking they are liking it

I think I’ll borrow the time one, and use it to spend more with my babies, instead of on computer, cleaning up or doing other boring household chores. 2013 is also the year I will be more patient – or try to at least!
I hope the kids are on the mend! Happy New Year

Time well spent I think! It’s not like the floors or bathroom are going to go anywhere if we decide they can wait!
Seems we all are in agreeance on the whole patience thing lol
Yep JW14 is back to normal thank goodness. And Gravel is having a couple of days at my besties house. All reports say she’s mending well.

We definitely can, I think that’s why I’ve never gone back to resolutions. They don’t teach you or help you grow as a person.

Great words! Very fitting and something we should all be remembering! I think I’ll make the most of this time while little one is asleep and hubby is over on the couch alone!

Very wise words. And despite being a very social person I actually don’t enjoy talking on the phone that much. But I think it is so important to “try” things. And I may have been heard reciting (nagging) to my kids “just try!….how will you know if you don’t try!”
Martine@themodernparent recently posted..I resolve not to make any New Years resolutions
My hand is up, I’m guilty of saying *ahem* nagging the same thing to my littlies! Yet I find it hard to try something new myself!
Loved your blog post btw

My brothers and I have had many, many stacks on our bikes and skateboards, oh and not to forget the rollerblades. I think we gave our Mum many a heart attack. We all came out of it relatively unscathed and learned not to try that again! Love your words for this year! Karen

Excellent words for the year ahead. I have loved reading all the word of the year posts – should really work out mine! Have a wonderful 2013
I’m blown away by how many people do it now! When I started having words instead of resolutions I was a member of a forum, and the girls there did it. I thought it was fabulous to help

I sooo want a bike so I can go riding with the kids. I haven’t ridden one since about 1992! So I’m a little freaked out about falling off, I’m not a good balancer either! lol
I think “encourage” is a brilliant word for the year. It opens you up to so many possibilities.
