**THIS GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED*
One of the things in life I know a lot of people despise doing – I know I do, and I know my kids will agree – is admitting your Mother was right about something.
My Mummy will be happy to read… and I say this to you Mum with *please forgive me for doubting you* eyes…
“Mum you were right“
Mum’s been taking Fish Oil for the past few years and has told me more than once – read: a gazillion times – that I should try them out. They’re good for arthritic and muscular pain, good for your blood, good for your brain, and good for keeping your sanity.
If you’ve read SMOM for long enough, you’d know my health isn’t the best. I suffer from an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which leaves me in a lot of pain some days. I’m anaemic – my body has insisted on rejecting any iron I’ve tried to feed it since I was around eleven years old. My brain, well I forget everything… ask my kids. And my sanity some would say it’s questionable – I have six kids, I’m lucky to have any!
So when I received an email from Nordic Naturals a few months ago asking if I’d like to review some of their products I couldn’t say no.
Mum would have killed me for starters… And I thought it was about time I got over a fear which has stopped me trying them out before now… Fish flavoured burps.
Yes people, fish burps have had me scared shitless of taking fish oil. You can blame everyone I know that takes them for freaking me out with their “oh my goshness this tastes disgusting” look on their faces when they’ve taken theirs.

So needless to say it took a couple of days after my parcel arrived to build the courage to try the Ultimate Omega fish oil gels. The morning I took my first dose* I looked like a little kid standing in the kitchen who had to eat a whole plate of veggies and was trying to put it off!
I threw them gel caps down my throat to get it over and done with quick, and was pretty darn happy when I realised I didn’t get a fish taste, SCORE!
Even better about half an hour later when I realised when I burped there was no fish taste – DOUBLE SCORE!
There was only a really mellow taste of lemon. So I was freaking out about nothing! Thankyou not so good friends of mine for making me scared of taking these things for so long!
But the big test and the main reason I said yes to reviewing and wanting to try Nordic Naturals Omega-3 fish oil was my pain.
Omega-3s for the Back and Joints
Back and joint pain often originates in different causes, but typically has one underlying factor—inflammation. Normally a protective mechanism, inflammation can produce many negative health effects when it becomes a long-term or chronic condition—including chronic pain and the breakdown of cartilage and tissue. A large body of scientific evidence indicates that fish oil supports healthy inflammatory levels and the internal repair systems that operate in response to inflammation. Studies show that EPA and DHA, the omega–3 essential fatty acids in fish oil, support the maintenance of healthy inflammatory levels that help alleviate back and joint pain.
The research-backed benefits of fish oil include:
• Promotes back and joint health
• Supports healthy inflammatory levels
• Promotes joint mobility and flexibility
• Supports internal repair systems that operate in response to inflammation
• Is natural and safe for long-term use
I was stoked to be able to report back to Nordic Naturals after a month of taking their Ultimate Omega that I’d only had two flares in that time – when I started taking the Ultimate Omega I’d been having chronic pain every day for the previous four or so months, to the point of not being able to walk a couple of times due to my feet hurting.
I’ve been taking them now for two months and the difference they have made is awesome. I’ve had a few bad flares of pain in that time, but I know it’s because I pushed my body to the limits running around for end of year school activities and Christmas.
But the freaky part – step away from the review males of the species, I doubt you want to know this – my last period took me by surprise! Yeahuh!! The leg pain I inherited from my Mother, and my daughter has inherited from me in the lead up to cranky week didn’t arrive. I discovered – after the fact – that Omega-3 fish oils are good if you suffer from period pain. TRIPLE SCORE!
I also received Children’s DHA for the kids to try out. With “Great Strawberry Taste” printed on the side of the bottle I thought I was in. Two of the kids wear glasses, and we have a history of dyslexia in our family, so I was hopeful the kids just might like them… I got my answer pretty quick. A big fat “Nup”. Only the smallest OgreBoy thought they tasted fabulous, he was happy enough to pig out if I was going to let him – don’t panic he’s only had half the recommended dosage** per day. I swear the only supplement my other kids will ever like is Vitamin C! My older kids however, did give the Ultimate Omega a big thumb’s up taste wise. So that’s half a score!
The Organic Nordic Naturals lip balm… Oh my goshness, that shizz is good! The oldest OgreGirl, The Sixth, and myself have been trialling this because well, us girls need lip balm in our bags, it’s an essential! And we’ve all agreed that we love it. The smallest OgreGirl suffers from eczema and is unable to use a lot of shampoo’s, conditioner’s and skin products due to irritation. Lip balm has been something we’ve struggled with finding for her to be able to use, and with the dry weather it’s been hellish with her dry lips. I took the plunge and convinced her to try the lip balm – thankyou to the person who invented chocolate I owe you one – and we had success! She can use it. No stingy lips, no scraping at her face to get it off – after the face painting saga of 2010, I hadn’t dared put anything near her!
* Ultimate Omega recommended daily dose is 2 soft gels per day with food.
** Children’s DHA recommended daily dose is 4 soft gels per day with food.

So good to read of supplements that actually work – there are so many con artists out there. Glad to hear you are getting some relief !
Have the best day !

That is so true! I trialled some for a few months for my kidney a couple of years ago, and they did nothing. Hence why I’m sceptical of using supplements, and trialled these for a couple of months before reviewing.
You have an awesome day too sweets xx

Oh God there is nothing worse than realising “Mum was right”! My mum has been taking fish oil for years too and says she doesn’t really notice a difference….until she misses a few days! I am absolutely HOPELESS at remembering to take any kind of pills though. Hope you find them helpful for you. x Aroha #teamIBOT

Your Mum is right, I did the same thing… at the worst time. When Christmas was over and done with – around New Years – I forgot to take mine for a few days and couldn’t figure out why I was feeling off. I realised when I was eating dinner one night I’d forgotten to take my gels for about three days. Once I was back on them I realised what a difference they were making.
Have a great day Aroha, and Thanks for being a fabulous #TeamIBOT member

I’ve been giving my daughter the odd fish oil tablet now and again. She loves them.
My best healthy diet tip, is increase your dietary fibre. And no, high fibre white bread doesn’t count (it’s fake fibre), it has to be real wholemeal style fibre. Chickpeas, oatbran style fibre. Not only does it make you feel full (so good for losing / maintaining weight), but more importantly it also gets the bacteria in your gut working, which has all sorts of anti-inflammatory benefits. Whenever my husband gets a sore back, he ups his fibre intake and it fixes itself.

My naughtiest little one (aged 3) ripped the cap off a bottle of kids’ fish oil supplements in a chemist recently, so then I had to buy it. I hoped she would enjoy taking them too because they weren’t on my shopping list but I knew they’d be good for her. But no, it was not to be. She and her sister love the jube and tablet vitamins like they love lollies though. I will be squeezing the fish oil into smoothies from now on. Great to hear you got such a good result from your trial.

Everyone, but everyone, can benefit from fish oil. It’s seriously awesome stuff now that it doesn’t give you cat breath!
Awesome review Miss Cinders, thanks for that! You’ve now made me want to go buy them. I have bad back pain and I’ve only just got my period back after #3 and it was a night mare! I’ve never taken fish oil – I had no idea it did so much? I knew that it was good for the brain but I thought that was the extent of it, and I figured I’m already such a know it all as it is, why would I need more brain power? Evident that I do, obviously
My husband has been banging on at me for years about taking fish oil too and I have been resisting for the same reason. I will not be showing him this post! Lol!
Worst getting fit moment was when I was doing post-natal yoga and I unfortunately had a little wind at a not so convenient time. Thankfully it was the kind of post-natal yoga you take your baby along with you and I just blamed it on her. Not sure if they believed me though but I choose to believe they did!

First session with my new personal trainer, who by the way was rather gorgeous, and I accidentally farted. Yes it was loud, yes it did stink & yes he was holding my feet while it happened. No I never went back to train with him again, even though I’d prepaid for a dozen sessions.
When trying to get fit again after having a baby I booked myself into some group personal training sessions. I turn up to the first session in a brand new pair of light grey leggings and begin frantically exercising away my excess weight, when I finish I am hot and red and sweating profusely, but it seems that the bulk of my sweat is in my crutch region which has caused my leggings to darken in colour looking like I’ve had a bladder accident.
Oh snap Sharon. This happened to me the first time I went running as well!

I had two nostrils full pf coldsores, I didnt even know they grew in noses, and had never had one before! They were so painful, the thought of a cold and having to blow my nose made me cry. I tried everything untill a young girl at the chemist told me she has L-lysine for them. It is with all the vitamins, is cheap and actually fixed the problem when the Dr’s couldn’t!!
Have liked you on facebook
Oh what I would do to have relief from both back pain AND period pain!
Best tip – wear a good sports bra while exercising
Worse experience – don’t wait until after the fact to buy said good sports bra. Exercise for big boobed women is an exercise in frustration! And discomfort

What a great giveaway and promising review! I have finally put myself first for a few hours a week and joined the gym. I love it! I go at five just as the three kids sit down to dinner!! Win win for everyone!
My best healthy tip one’ll be:
A family dance-off on the Wii.
Healthy tip number two:
More fruits and veggies -long overdue!
Healthy tip three leaves me puffing,
Exercises for body buffing!
Healthy tip number four:
Soft drinks, cordials, out the door.
Healthy tip five just for dad,
Quit smoking, you won’t go mad!
Healthy tip six swap white to brown,
Helps keep the GI down.
Healthy tip seven awaits,
Hit the pavement on skates!
Healthy tip eight have more giggles,
Really tightens all that jiggles.
Healthy tip nine swap more for less,
Its the hardest, I confess!
Healthy tip ten, last not least
Only one chocolate, NOT a feast!
I went and jointed an exclusive gym and started taking multivitamins (which give me gas really badly). Let me just say i am glad the music is loud during pump class!
My tip – is always being open to learning more about health! We need to be open minded on this one as it’s just so important for ourselves and our kids that we learn to make good choices with the way we eat and live. I always love hearing about new supplement too. I have kids with multiple food allergies and intolerances so supplements are our best friend!

Best health tip…be consistent..no point in doing something for a few weeks or months and then stopping, you need to continue and make it a way of life, not just a short habit.
My worst getting healthy experience is definitely trying to get number 2 kid (a son with Aspergers) to go to the doctors or have vitamins or medicine. The experiences .can be scaring for everybody. He is such a clown thou it’s hard not to laugh at him.
When we took him for his 4 year old immunisation we arrived only to realise that he had managed to wear 2 thirst and 2 jumpers so we couldn’t get to his arms. The acrobatics that ensued were quite hysterical!
lol I joined a gym and then broke 3 ribs coughing after having bronchitus – they didn’t believe me why I wanted to suspend my membership for a month!
